Dylan.  “Idiot Wind.”  Live, fresh after his divorce.  This isn’t a song—it’s a vendetta.

Conventional wisdom has it Bob Dylan’s record Blood On The Tracks is about the death of a relationship.  That same conventional wisdom has it that there was something very personal about that record.  We know so little about Dylan, but we do know he was going through a messy divorce around this time.  We also know that Dylan recorded two very different versions of Blood On The Tracks, which was very unusual for him—back in those days, he had a frustratingly disinterested attitude for his recording sessions, like he didn’t care if he was making a masterpiece or a flop.  Not with Blood On The Tracks, though.  Maybe there really was something personal about that record.

The proof is this track, a live version of “Idiot Wind” from the Hard Rain record.  This is from Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue period, when he toured the nation with a mask painted over his face.  Just listen to how he performs this song.  It seethes with barely-contained fury.  The band plays haltingly at one moment, then rages the next, teetering on the edge of no-control.  Somehow Dylan maintains this level of tension for more than ten minutes.  Why so long?  Well, remember what the wolf told Little Red Riding Hood?  The better to eat you with, my dear.
